Manual transmission drain plug.. how far does it screw in?

How far does the manual transmission drain plug screw back in? I put it back into my 91 318is but 3 or 4 of the threads are still exposed but it's turned in quite a bit already and is really tight and won't budge (torque wrench is clicking at 30ft lbs.. I didnt' want to go to 40 which is the recommended rating or strip something)

Anyway, is this normal? No leaks or anything, and I can't remember how it was before.

Used Valvoline Max Life ATF instead of Redline, because bavauto recommended and sold me the wrong fluid (MTL). grr.

that should be fine. do it untill its tight. i always put a little silicone on the threads (works like locktight) but its not nessasary.

There should be a few threads showing still. Torque it to 40 pounds.

It's a pipe-threaded plug. No silicon needed if you ever want to get it back out again.
