I have a 1988 BMW 325 ix I just got as my first project . I was on the freeway test driving when suddenly my gear shift off and I was trying to put it back in to gear but it doesn't go in gear or grind or anything . Can someone help find the source of the problem and if u have any tips on what I should maintain while I'm fixing drive train ? That will prevent any future problems .

Thanks for the reply. It's a manual transmission . While I was on the free way the shifter went off 4th gear to neutral and wouldn't go back in gear anymore . It shifts thru the gears 1,2,3,4,5 without grinding or anything even when you don't hold down clutch.. What could it be . Did my tranny break down?Black 1988 325ix under constructionComment

you'll have to give a better description.
does the clutch pedal seem to work? if the clutch master or slave fails, you won't be able to shift it.
if the shifter was broken I think you'd know it.
