really weird shifter problem, help? :(

hey guys. ive had this really weird problem with my shifter since i got my 88 325i 4 door. the shifter sits about 2 inches forward, so much that the PO cut out part of the center console so he could still shift. the guy told me that it was just the shifter linkage and that he put the wrong kind in, but i would like everyones ideas on what it might be before i go and buy it.

I believe its exactly what you claim the PO said it is.

What is happening is the linkage is too long therefore pushing the shift lever inside the car forward. Just get a OEM E30 one and you should be fine. Its a 10 minute job and most of that is lifting the car.

ok, just found a diagram of the shifter assembly here (http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...ting_part_2#13) which parts do you think needs replaced? :/

im pretty sure this will be a shit ton of work :/ i have to remove the exhaust and heat shielding right?

No, you just loosen the e rxhaust to remove heat shield. You might even be able to do it without removing heat shield. If you think this is a ton of work than you're probably not very mechanically inclined.

That'll only take you 5 minutes and replacing the shifter takes about 10. I think it's exactly what PO says it is. And if you think this is a shit ton of work do yourself a favor and never do a motorswap lol

well i am very mechanically inclined @poorboys. i just haven't ever worked on an e30. my e36 you had to drop the exhaust and part of the driveline

E30s are really simple compared to the Ex6 cars... I do a bunch of work with my dad on his M3 and it's a bitch compared to the E30
