weird diff issue after suspension rebuild.

    So guys and gals,
I have a 90 325is with the LSD. I recently removed the rear subframe to replace all the bushings and CV shafts. During which I removed my diff and sat it aside. Upon completion I reinstalled everything in the car went to bolt up the driveshaft to find the the diff will spin roughy 120° in either direction but that's it, it gets tight and won't complete the rotation. Its not stopping solidly, just tightens and I'm not willing to force it.

The neighbor kid (5) was playing with it the one day it was sitting. Is it possible that in it being rotated around and/or rolled upside down(who knows what he did while I wasn't looking) that a slide pin or something of that nature slide out of place and is causing binding issues?

I'm by no means new to cars or tech work just not very familiar with BMW's LSD.
    Thanks G

take the cover off and see if there's something loose in there? It'd be a jam between the ring gear and pinion I'd think.

I appreciate the fast response. I'm trying to get to an alignment appointment which is looking like its not going to happen. I was hoping this is something someone has run into and knows the issue. I don't have a spare diff gasket or gear oil which is why i havent pulled the cover yet. And I'm at a garage with no ride other than the car I'm working on. I guess I just gotta open it. I'm sure it won't miraculously fix itself.

You dont have to take the cover off, just see if the speed sensor came off by loosening the 2 10mm bolts and spin it, if it spins then the sensors is in the way. If its doesnt spin then take off the cover.

Cover is off and nothing is in there. Its clean no shaving of any sort but I didn't expect to see shavings just something misaligned as it worked perfectly when removed. Any thoughts?

Disconnect the half shafts from the differential and see if it turns then. If it does try rotating each wheel.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Woowwwww!! Well I think working for more than 24 hrs played into this!! I didn't have my rear shocks attached to the trailing arms. I believe the CV were binding at the severe angle. Man sleep deprivation is a b****! I panicked when their was a little binding. Sorry

Jlevie- Thanks for the response- always nice getting advise/info from a tech/instructor. I had just finished putting the half shafts back on when I read your response.
