If the CV joints and the splines of the axle are good, you can repack with grease and replace the boots yourself. The next choice would be a good used axle and new boots/grease. And the final choice would be a reman axle from BMW.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I tried rebuilding it myself... took it apart to clean and regrease. Got it back together and now it doesn't have the same flex in the joint... would prefer to run a OEM bmw axle than an aftermarket one.

I believe all axles are OE and that it's just the rebuilders who vary. I just bought a set of boots from BMW that it turns out I didn't need but those are about $200 for all 4.

I've seen brand new OEM axles (GKN Lobro makes them for BMW) for as low as $215 and more recently about $260/side. BMA seems to have the best price on these.

Kind of makes the economics of re packing an old shaft questionable so I'd either cheap out on after market boots just to get by or replace the entire half shaft.

If the shaft splines are still good then buy new CV joints+ boots and install them?

its very simple just requires a table, box of gloves and paper towels for the mess.
