Yes itll work. You may or may not have to remove your harmonic balancer if you have one at all

I have a 99 m3 shifter in my car and love it, yes there are shorter ones but I like it, much improved over stock but still feels stock

Yeah the e36 m shifter is probably noticeably shorter, not sure by how much exactly, though.
