    m60/62 quick trans questions

The research I'm doing has been scattered, but I'm just looking for a couple of yes or no answers with maybe some buts.

I've been looking into an M60/62 swap, but my trans options are confusing the hell out of me. I really would like to know what 5 speeds (money is the issue with a 6 speed) will mate directly (i use that term loosely) to the M60b40 or the M62b44.

So far I'm sort of gathering that the ZF S5d-320 will work, but what vehicles are those in? It seems Ebay (not completely trustworthy, I know) thinks that it comes out of the E39, E36, and Z3? Other info says they came out of e34 530i's.

Any clarity would help. The engine I want is either an M60b40 or m62b44 and some decent 5-speed with the least hassle. Make sense?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

There are two transmissions that bolt up to the m60/m62/s62.

      Getrag 420g 6 speed from e34 540i, e39 540i, and e39 M5.

ZF 310/320 5 speed, only from an e34 530i. Although the trans is virtually identical to the ZF 310/320 found in many BMW I6 cars, the bell housing is different. The m60/m62/s62 bellhousing is not shared on any other models, so only transmissions that came with those engines from the factory can be used.

The ZF 320 replaced the ZF 310 in 9/95. They are basically the same, the 320 is apparently just a bit stronger, with a higher torque rating. Since e34 530i's were only made until the end of 95, almost every e34 530i ZF trans will be a 310. So make sure you keep your eye out for both.

FYI, there is a V8 subforum on this forum, there is a ton of info there that would likely answer any questions you have.
