just moved to Castle rock 1 month ago ,still settling in ,let me know if you want to stop by see some of my collection and shoot the breeze, or if you want help , have quite a few tools too
yup its a common problem (got my IX cheap because of that), be sure to check the allen bolt up on top and as your splitting the case i would remove it and Red loctite it . i did that to mine and the Z3 shifter upgrade ,new seals and its dry, tight and no shift problems in 20k milesLeave a comment:

I have made my own bmw tool out of some piping and am splitting the getrag just like this
Damn that video and the bently made it seem so easy
So your in castle rock? I'm in denver, I might have to take you up on that offer and check out that manual. All I have is the bently and so far have followed the first few steps but either the bently or I seem to be missing a step
Btw I seem to have the exact same problem you had before( ix manual trans stuck in reverse)Leave a comment:

I would be interested in this. We have one trans that lost 4th gear, and another with a broken tailstock and leaking input shaft (can't get a seal to hold, surface pitting on shaft from sitting outside). If I could make 1 out of 2 that would be great, we have another 2 spare trannys lined up so this will be an off season "always wanted to do that" project.
you'll have to come to Colorado if you want to look at the manual
i have a link to the factory TIS /manual online but it doesnt show trans dis-assembly

i have the Factory manual if you want to look at itLeave a comment:

you dont pull the rear flange to split the case ,everything stays attached to the rear half of the case when split , you have to pull the front case off the input shaft bearing to split the case . the reason it stopped at about 1/2 " is the 4th gear on the layshaft is hitting the 4th gear syncro hub on the input shaft ,and that shaft wont come out of the front case section because its held in by input shaft bearing (press fit ,and snap ring) you need special tools #23 1 460 and 33 1 301 to pull the front case off the bearing/input shaft ,it basically a screw press with adapter that bolts to same place as clutch release sleeve with a long tube that goes over length of input shaft ,screw pushes on end of input shaft and pushes it and bearing rearward out of front case halfLast edited by spdracrm3; 06-25-2015, 07:43 AM.Leave a comment:

Yeah, pull the rear flange. See what happens... it's been too long since I opened
up a 260, but the 240/245s open that way...

doughnut I think we are talking about different things
yes I understand the transmissions is assembled from the back that is why I thought it was weird you said I had to undo the output flange that is located at the rear most portion of the transmission in order to take off the front half of the case
now I have no clue what your thinking and its a normal getrag 260 so it is just a two piece housing
ill post picutes later today not sure they can helpLeave a comment:

your saying this is all necessary just to remove the front housing correct?
boy do the transmission diagrams give me a headache but when it shows the front housing it doesn't really show anything attached and I assumed it just pulled off with the input shaft bearing
o and I got the circle clip in the bell housingLast edited by Dirty325ix; 06-07-2015, 10:22 PM.Leave a comment:
