    Getrag 260/5 max torque

Hey guys, so how much torque a getrag 260/5 will withstand without blowing to pieces?
this is asuming regular track use, with no drag racing style launches. with thick rubber on the back (lets say 265).

what is the usual breaking point when punishing this gearboxes? is it the housing or the gears?
is there any way to improve the gearbox to make it survive more punishment?

i know u guys up north dont have trouble getting replacement gearbox from the junkyard, but down here those aint that common, specially the ones with the overdrive 5th gear. it was hard for me to get this one, and id like to keep it alive for as long as possible :P

Seems like the 3rd- 4th gear shift fork is a weak spot- it's aluminum.
They're getting hard to find around here, too.

Beyond that, shift deliberately. They're pretty durable when not abused.

As to max torque, I dunno...

thanks for your response. so as long as you are gentle while changing gears, once the gear is engaged it should be fine, right?

im guesstimating my car should be putting down 400-500nm. i hope that box lasts, at least a couple years, then i guess ill end up getting one of those ZF 6spd. but that seems to require lots of parts that i dont have now.

Wow- with that much torque, I'd also be careful not to flat- foot it in first gear, too-
the diff might have trouble with that!

But yes, it seems that most of the failures we see in the race cars comes from shifting,
        not durability...

im keeping the stock 323ti axles as a fuse, hoping they become the breaking point of the drivetrain before any of the other parts.

is heat a problem on this gearbox when under extended punishment? i know that it may be a problem in the diff, but i can fix that with an alpina cover.

again, thanks for your imput, much appreciated.

I never see temps above coolant (180- 200) in the gearbox,
even when the outside temps are 95+ and the oil's 220+.
Yes, the diff will go way up (280+) in those circumstances.

A 323ti? Nice! Mine has an M42, and I keep thinking I should
find a donor M3 for a nice winter project one year...
