e28 SuperEta engine & trans in late e30- Trans compatibility?

So in an unfortunate turn of events, a buddy with a 1988 e28 528e got his car crunched up by a semi ( http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...&postcount=298 ).

He offered me the motor and trans, assuming that he can get a fair buyback price. He has built the SEta motor to a 2.7i and has swapped in a single mass flywheel from an e30.

    Per RealOEM, he has a G260/5.10 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=23_0608

He has the CPS on the front of the motor and no reference sensors on the bellhousing.

I was researching the compatibility with my 1989 325i (convertible, not that it matters) and am seeing some confusing info that actually contradicts how he built the car.

    My car has a G260.15 (or .05, but should be .15): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=23_0297

First, I have looked at the threads that seem to compile the info and have followed the links to external sites as well:

Based on those threads his 1988 528e should have come with a G260 with a deep bellhousing and a dual mass flywheel. The threads noted that a deeper (Euro) throwout bearing would compensate for the deeper bellhousing and he would be good to go.

HOWEVER, when he replaced the dual mass flywheel he did not order the Euro TOB (he used a regular TOB as indicated for a normal e30 325i) and it all went together without any issues. It is POSSIBLE that a previous owner had swapped in a shallow bellhousing G260 but nothing indicates that.

So all that said, I know that I will need a small output flange on this G260 to match my small guibo driveshaft but the real question is given that the current motor and transmission work together in his e28 is there any reason to think that swapping that whole assembly into my e30 will result in compatibility issues?

Seems like it would work to me.

Others have reported that they got away without the longer throwout bearing, too...

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

Hopefully that is correct. If I am not separating the engine from the transmission then I should be good to go, assuming that the driveshaft is long enough to reach the trans output flange.
