Lift the back end of the car so both rear wheels are clear of the ground. Give one of the rear tires a spin. Watch them both. If they both spin in the same direction you have an LSD. If they spin in opposite directions from one another you have open gearing.

Doing a burnout would be more fun though.

It is easy. Rev the engine to about 4K and pop the clutch while in first. Go back to where you did the burnout. If there is two lines, you have LSD. If one line, open.

If there's equal load on both sides of an open differential it will leave two tires marks. So, burnout test FTL.

Just jack it up and spin the wheels manually like the stated post above.

God. Just look at the tag on the side of the diff. If the number begins or ends with an S, it's LSD.

He's just an impatient moron .

And the jack it up and spin a wheel test does not work exactly as described above .

Even a open diff could spin both wheels in the same direction if you just turn one of the wheels .

In our cars you have to either hold the input shaft still or hold one of the tires while turning the input shaft .

On his Porker with a transaxle I would suggest leaving the car in gear and then turning one of the wheels .

                    Lsd?

                    Hi guys,

I'm just bought a 325i and the specs in my VIN shows that my car should have an LSD. However, when I had the car on a lift and spun one of the tires, the other spun in the opposite direction. Is this the only way to check the LSD? Should the wheels spin in the same direction even without any resistance on the tires?

Also, the tag on the diff read 3.91. I couldn't tell if it had an "S" or not. Does this help?

                    Thanks!
