Series 1 E30 Tunnel Mount Shifter??

So i've heard that if im doing a m50b25tu swap in my series 1 e30 with a Getrag 250 then i'm going to need to do a tunnel mounted shifter?

I don't know what this entitles me doing and how i do it because i've never heard of anyone needing to do it in an E30. So can someone tell me what needs to be done or point me in the right direction of where i can get the things needed or buy a kit or something.

    Thanks

Okay i've heard of people doing tunnel mount shifters before but not necessarily for an m50 swap in an e30

There's a couple ways to go about the shift linkage. The most common is to use the shift linkage that usually comes with the transmission. For reference, a G260 will work a on a 24v e30 using the stock e30 g260 carrier and selector lever, and a ZF on a 24v will work in an e30 using the stock e36 ZF shift carrier and selector lever. Presumably the G250 out of an M50 e36 will work with stock e36 g250 linkage as well.

The other option is to do the "DTM" style plate shifter. This is does away with the OEM carrier, and the plate where the shift lever pivots from is bolted directly to the transmission tunned. Depending on the trans combo, you may have shorten/lengthen the selector lever (more common on 6-speed conversions). You can either buy these from places like AKG, or you can make one by taking an early mode e30 with the sheet metal console shift linkage, and cut it down to mount to the top of the e30 transmission tunnel.
