    Shift linkage too long?

I converted my 86ES from the sheet metal shifter to the later aluminum style. I kept the linkage from the sheet metal shifter installed but now the gear selector won’t go forward enough and it barely engages first, third and fifth. Could it be that the linkage is too long? Should I try a shorter linkage?

The E does have a different length shift rod (180mm) than an I (187mm)

I am in need of a sheet metal shifter! I have an extra "I" shift rod.
