    Flywheel question

While I had the motor and tranny, out I replaced the clutch, pilot bearing, etc, also had the flywheel resurfaced. After everything was back in the car, I discovered an extra part. There is a ring that fits between the bolts that hold the flywheel and the flywheel itself. I believe it's purpose is to distribute the load from the bolts evenly across the FW. I'm thinking it is a necessary part and am not looking forward to pulling the tranny again but I thought I would check here first.
So - do I really need it?

I wonder if it was acting as more of a washer. I don't see it causing any problems without it.

How thick are the washers? I would be afraid of not having them in. Have you driven the car yet?

I think he's talking about the piece that is round with holes for the bolts to go through. It bolts on between the flywheel and the bolts. I believe it's only one piece.

Josh - it's a one piece spacer about 4 inches across, a couple of mm thick.

Mike - I have started it by not driven it (no suspension yet)

I'm sure it is there for a reason so I'm pulling the tranny. I just don't want to worry about it every time I drive it.

          sigh..

If you do put it in, you'll need new flywheel bolts. They are stretch bolts. I'd say if you had to chose between puting the spacer in, re-using the old bolts, and leaving the spacer out, I would just leave the spacer out. It acts as a large washer.

But to do it correctly, get new flywheel bolts and put the spacer in.

New bolts on order. The thing that stinks is that these are (were) brand new bolts.
