    Open diff gear/pinion into LSD

After driving with the 2.93 for a couple of months, I am realizing that the gearing is way too long for my use, and it is only fully useful in a few occasions.

I have some spare diffs just sitting at the warehouse and I was wondering if I could swap the gear and the pinion from lets say a 3.25/73 open diff into and bolt it on the LSD unit.

It seems feasible, I just dont want to take my whole diff apart to be surprised at the last minute. -.-'

    Thanks,
    Erick

it's possible, but putting a diff together properly is the difficult part. you need the right clearances, shims, etc. or the diff will be very noisy and may eventually fail.

Agreed. It is possible, but only if you know how to set up the ring and pinion backlash, bearing pre-load, etc. This is not a project for an inexperienced diyer.

        What they're saying.

If you're going to have it done, have a shop do it, or do a more cost effective way of just selling what you have for something else. A buddy of mine had a dealership do a rear end (for free, his dad works there) for new gearing. It was fairly noisey at first, then got very loud in the next few days, still works fine to this day however, it's very audible even from outside the car though.

It's a very, very precise proceedure.

I dont trust anyone's work with something that mechanical. No one "cost effective" at least.

I rather just trust BMW and get another LSD unit with a ratio that would be more suitable for my needs.
