i usually wedge a wrench in there to hold everything still, and a racheting wrench to loosen the nuts. you only have to undo three of them to get the tcase off, you can do the other three on the bench if you're changing the flex disc.

im having troubles getting the guibo between the tranny and transfer case loose. Did you use a regular wrench or a gear wrench, Fine tooth ratchet? Theres not much room in there...

The four bolts that attach the case to the transmission... the ones where two of the bolts up top you have to use extensions and a ujoint... it's that set of four bolts, but I stripped out one of the bottom ones.

the only other thing you could replace is the tranny/transfer case mount. mine needs it really bad (tranny shifts around enough that the flex disc rubs on the exhaust heat sheild), but I haven't gotten to it yet. not sure how hard it would be to do with the transfer case on the car, but redoing the shifter linkage is much easier with the transfer case off anyway.

removing the transfer case isn't too bad once you have the rear driveshaft and exhaust off, you need to remove the front driveshaft (about 20 minutes), undo the flex disc in between the tranny and t-case, and then undo the 4 bolts holding the t-case to the tranny. I undo the top 2 bolts on the t-case on top through the shifter console with several extensions and a u-joint, using a jack to lower and raise the tranny so I can get it in the right position. takes about an hour or two total.

    Hey, Nando...

While I've got everything out, what should I replace? I'm looking at getting a short shifter and replacing the bushings up there, but is there anything I else I should be replacing?

Also, make sure that the large hex nut doesn't sink TOO far back because it will just become a pain in the rear to get it back out again.

on the back of the driveshaft, near the rear differential, is a large hex nut. using a channel locks or something large, turn the nut counterclockwise (I think!) to "loosen" the driveshaft. once you get it turned a good ways (it should start sinking in towards the differential), you should be able to collapse the driveshaft enough to get over the centering nub on the front of the driveshaft.

alternatively, you could drop the rear differential enough to pull it away from the driveshaft. this is how I did it originally, but I was dropping the entire subframe to change all the bushings.

the ix has no CSB at all. only the guibo and one set of u-joints for the rear. I got a new remanufactured driveshaft last year for around $500 from bavauto.

I'm currently thinking about changing the guibo and center bearing, because there is some pretty bad vibration around 80 mph. (I have an 88 ix with 264,000 miles.)

Any answers will help me too.
    Yeehaw
