How much power can the m10 5spd take ?

How much power can the early e30 318i transmission take before breaking ?

I've seen stock m10 engines handle 200-300hp, but is the transmission able to handle this power for a long time ? I've had a clutch job done on mine recently, about 1k miles ago, flywheel was also resurfaced and new master/slave cylinders were installed along with new tranny ie bushings.

Now I am considering going the m10 turbo route, plus it would be kind of a waste to throw away the tranny after I spend close to $800 on the clutch parts/labor etc. Would I be safe running 200-250whp through it with regular autox/track days ?

So, back to the main question, how strong is the tranny ?

I believe the number touted around the interweb is that the Getrag 240 can handle around ~220 lbs-ft. The clutch, however, probably can't.

And of course there is no other tranny that bolts to the m10 to handle more ?

You could bolt up a getrag 265 or 280 if you wanted. They are expensive though.

yeah the s14/265 will bolt up. But good luck finding one and good luck not spending a TON of $$. Not worth it for a 25lbs increase imho.

Whats the code for the M30 'box, has that been mentioned? Haven't done myself but apparently fits, may to make a few clearanc dents on the transmission tunnel or something like that though.

You can put alot more then 240lbs
The Getrag numbers are not there torque design outputs,
you think the M30 trans was designed for 265LBS ?
When the FI guys put twice as much trough them.

                Those are just internet rumours

thats what they are rated at, or so I've been told from a MUCH more reliable resource than someone on a forum in iceland. How is that a hard concept to grasp anyway? The 318 is 1.8l the 325 is 2.5l the getrag 240 is rated at 240lbs of tq.
