    throwout bearing??

whats up guys... i have a noise coming from my tranny. i'm 99% sure its the throwout bearing. it only makes noise when the clutch is engaged in neutral.

    2 questions.

1, is there a sure fire way to diagnose that it is indeed the bearing?
2, anyone know what kind of labor hours are involved for it to be fixed, as i dont have a lift to be playing with a tranny...

as far as i know, the entire clutch assymbly was replaced in jan 06. (btw it's an e36 getrag, but i'm assuming its functions and the way it works are similar enough to a getrag 260)

It could be the input shaft bearing on the transmission rattling

This is a problem I have been battling since the dawn of time it seems.

I still have that noise, I have no idea what it could be now, and frankly I just don't care anymore.

I have a new pilot bearing, new clutch, new throwout bearing, brand new input shaft bearing, 13lb flywheel, etc.

You don't need a lift to drop the transmission. You can do it on jackstands. You'll likely be charged between 4 to 6 labor hours for the job.

i will try to get something off realoem.com right now to show you what happened...

here it is, a schematic of the clutch control parts:

when i first thought the noise was from the tranny, i had put it up on stands to try and source the problem. old man got under there and said that the bolts for number 14 were loose. esp the bottom one and everytime i pressed the clutch it would push out a bit.

they were tightened down, but the noise hasnt really gone away. what would be the symptoms of the input shaft bearing?

well, everything was put in new when the swap was done by the PO in early '06. so i dont see why it'd be going so soon.

yea, i guess it could be done at home. it'd just be a real pita. if there is a definate need to get in there, hopefully i can convince my old man to help me out. just tryin to figure out if its worth the trouble doing it at home... but its seeming more and more like it is.

Hell why not drop out the whole fukin thing and fix your blower too?
I told you about this noise and I think every one especially those of us who went light on the flywheel has it. The only band aid for it is the UUC fix I gave you. Try that and see if it still bugs you. If so you will need to upgrade your speakers and amplifier. ;)

lol, well i havent checked the fuses or resisters for the blower motor yet, i'm bout to do that right now.

and i think the lightweight flywheel noise you are talking about is that clacking that happens when you disengage the clutch letting it out of gear? i get that but that doesnt bother me... i'm bout to put up a friggin video on photobucket so you guys can hear what i'm talkin about.

oh, and stop stalking me!! :hitler:

              :p

edit: and just fyi, the only time this bitch is getting dropped is when i have a 2.8 or bigger to put back in ;-)

If you have a lightweight flywheel you will get a rattling noise when the transmission is in neutral and you aren't depressing the clutch pedal, even with perfect transmission input shaft bearings. If that's the case here you need to learn to live with it or swap in a normal weight flywheel.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i can live with it, i just dont want it to be there if it isnt normal.

when the car is cold it doesnt make the noise till it warms up and i play with the clutch.... or after i drive for a bit then stop - then its making the noise.

best way i can describe it short of posting a video is that it sounds like a helicopter.
