Changed driveshaft CSB... did I just screw myself?

I changed the driveshaft CSB on my car yesterday. I marked the phasing of the two halves before I disassembled it, but greasy hands plus manhandling the shaft trying to get the threaded lock collar off means that marks came off. Is there any way to determine how it was phased before to prevent vibration, or will I have to have it balanced?

It should be fine,(very little to no vibration) just remember to preload the CSB

I didnt mark the past 2 that i have done than they turned out fine

Called four different driveshaft places around town and only one is willing to balance it, although reluctantly. All of them want to do an exchange, but I don't want to spend $300+ on a driveshaft for a $400 car.

No I haven't driven it, but this is going on a race car that will be driven for probably 14 hours straight. I don't want to chance it.

If the cause of the CSB replacement was a failure of the rubber mount, it is almost a certainly that you need to replace the drive shaft. In almost all cases, that failure mode is caused by binding u-joints in the drive shaft.

I just did mine and had the same problem. My driveshaft came with 2 white dots painted by the factory on either side of the center bearing. Look for them.

FYI I just replaced the CSB and guibo as a preventative measure. Like I said, this is a $400 car that we are converting to compete in a 14 hour race, so changing them was cheap insurance IMO.

ecniv has the driveshaft right now and he said there are two yellow marks on either side of the center U-joint (one on each half of the shaft). Would those be the factory marks? If so, I might be saved yet.

Went back today and looked at the driveshaft and found the two factory white dots. I'm saved!

I have to change my CSB tomorrow. There is no rubber left in it its just the bearing bouncing around in the bracket...

In almost all cases, that failure of the CSB results from binding u-joints in the drive shaft. So in addition to the CSB you need a replacement or rebuilt drive shaft.

I changed mine and I didn't put it back together with the phasings right and its vibrating a tiny bit, i'm going to throw it up on a hoist soon and check for the white marks from the factory..

                          Where should they be?
