    From what you describe, the noises come with your foot OFF the clutch pedal, which means transmission input shaft is engaged and driven, even in neutral gear. Noises as a result of a bad TO bearing would usually come with the clutch pedal depressed (TO bearing engaged). When you depress the clutch pedal, the input shaft of the trans is disengaged, stopped turning. Your evidence agrees with this, because your noises also stop.

    The backwards clutch plate might have fxxked your trans. Sorry duder.

      Prolly taco'd the input shaft brng having the disk in backwards.

        I've had a car with a broken/loose flywheel bolt do this. You don't want that thing coming off. Depressing the pedal holds the flywheel tight against the crankshaft and makes the sound go away.
