    Trans lash

Me old bomb has ~180,000 miles on it and it is a bit clunky. I have replaced nearly every wear item on the car and it has been a large improvement. The transmission however, is loud as hell, rattles, clonks, lash, it is pretty well worn out. I am currently running Redline MTL, and the car shifts fine etc. but from what I understand, the MTL, though it improves shift quality, makes for a loud tranny.

My question is, what is the thickest trans fluid you guys are getting away with running? It never really is cold here, so I don't have to worry about that. I want to quiet the noise and provide as much "cushion" to the innards as possible.

Also, would I be ok to run Royal Purple 75w-140 in the rear end(LSD)? I have some left over from my Triumph's transmission and that shit was too expensive to leave sitting on the shelf.

    Thanks.

I'm fairly sure. Every thing in the drive train bar the engine and trans is new or has been inspected by myself. Guibo, csb, and the rear end were just replaced 2 weeks ago.

It's hard to put to words, but it sounds and feels like transmission lash, i.e. wear and slop between gears, etc. It is especially noticeable when reversing and then lifting off of the throttle. At low speeds, holding around 15mph, there is also some snatch in the drive train.

i'm in the process of tackling this issue as well and suspected the tranny too. But upon inspection, it found its not the tranny at all...
the scenerio that i'm putting together is that it doesnt take much lash anywhere in the drive line to provide a problem. I also think that the clutch plate springs have a roll in making things seem worse than they really are.

what have you replaced? what have you inspected to certainty that contains worn parts? Everything from the tranny output to the wheel bearing can be a suspect.

The clutch, and guibo are new. The csb is fairly recent, no signs of wear etc. u-joints are tight and smooth, rear end is tight w/ 80,000 miles on it, half shafts don't seem to have any slop. The rear wheel bearings are shot and are getting replaced as soon as time permits. I would be very surprised if those were the culprit, pleased, but surprised. I have had this car to bits and back together and the problem persists. the only real constant in this problem is the tranny.
