    P Code was 0011 - timing bank 1 advanced.

Today I installed new vanos oil drain valves, the old ones were had bad o-rings on them. Popped out w/o much effort.

Locked the crank and cams and the cam sensor wheel was slightly off on the passenger side. Is the passenger side the Bank 1?

Rotated the cam sensor wheel to match the hole in the upper timing cover and the code did not come back after clearing it.

Hopefully this is it and I won't need to re-adjust the vanos transmission(s) as well.

Sweet! Seems to be a not-so-invasive final adjustment to get the tone rings right on. Nice video find! Good luck to finish it up...

After speaking with a couple techs, I am being told that the codes indicate that the timing is not 100% spot on. If the vanos transmissions units were bad, there would be other codes. The valve behind the solenoid is an oil drain valve and can cause vanos startup noise because it drains the oil back.

So, I am going to re-time the thing again and get it scanned again. Doh.

EDIT: Also, are you getting good oil pressure?
I think we did that, no P code there and freq was listed as 1 , I think I have a print out in the car I'll double check.

Correct, when the crank/cams were locked, turned the vanos units backwards with the special tool and used an ohm meter before locking the transmission in it's backwards state.

No oil pressure light, no clunking or noises of any kind that I can hear (I know what a low oil pressure sound is like based on the m10/m20 sound when it starves for oil basically so nothing like that). I may still pull the oil filter housing possibly to get that thing cleaned out from old oil, do these have problems of any kind at all due to age/miles/old oil? Is there possibly an oil valve in there?

Are there any other tests in Autologic that can be done to confirm if it's TIMING that I did incorrectly OR if it's the transmission units that are bad? OR if it's cam sensors or something else altogether before I get back into it. I imagine or hope that there has got to be something that checks the range of motion maybe or something to verify or narrow down where the problem exactly might be?

I drove it this morning to work, started right up, no noises, pulls fine, idles fine, no issues with passing power. Sucks :(

I think the non return valve is the $20 valve in the head behind the vanos solenoid. I am going to order these first....

    part 8/9 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...51&hg=11&fg=15

not sure about cam sensors, I would think if they were bad there would be a specific code for the cam sensors.

Last resort would be two new vanos tranmissions units at about $450 a pop.

    Thoughts?

Some googling on this error -

    P0012 - BMW FC 33 - "A" Camshaft Position Timing Over Retarded (Bank 1)

Would be good to use a generic scan tool and get the "P" code since code 33 points to 3 separate issues. Depending on what code you actually have, could be the solenoid valve, non return valve, camshaft sensor, or any number of mechanical fault "sticking" "leaking" in the vanos unit for Bank 1 (passenger side) "

Alright got good news and bad news. Good news the lifter noise is gone. I've replaced the upper radiator hose, all good, no leaking.

Bad newis = check engine light is on due to fault (033) 21 function, camshaft control, inlet, bank 1.

Got it cleared with autologic, drove it and then it came back again along with (034) 22 function, camshaft, inlet, bank 2.

"This fault lamp (check engine) can also be requested by faults in the transmission control unit"

Did the VANOS TEST, shows vanos advancement time bank 1 and bank 2 at 4.4 S and vanos retardation time for bank 1 and bank 2 at 5.1 S.

Does this sound like my timing is correct, but the problem with the vanos transmission units?

I f-ing hate this thing, I swear, these are almost $500 a pop + having to pull the upper timing covers to replace them + re-time the engine.

Pfft. Every time it needed moved I just told Jean to get out of the way.

Try and pick up a steel cased powerglide, that'll pop a nut out.
