Ratio wise I don't think i will be able to put up with 5 speed. I definitely need overdrive as i will be doing a fair bit of mileage and want to have a nice low cruising ratio.
I certainly wanted to be able to utilise the m5 6 speed. Back to the drawing board.
This is what I have so far btw: an ix subframe and x5 sump, Im looking for a scrap v8 block to bolt up temporarily for measuring etc.Comment

Since the Getrag 265 has a removable bellhousing, you could use an auto trans bellhousing for the M60 and mill an adapter plate to bolt the 265 to it. The 265 has a rear case section similar to the rear case of the 260, with an abundance of bolts close to the back of the trans. You could either weld something to the 265 rear case or machine something to bolt up to the case bolts that are already there.
I do have a s14 with one of them bolted to it but it's my daily driver so can't really butcher it.... Yet.
I'd still rather find something non electronic tcase wise and get some mounting points welded to the m5 6spd.
I have been looking at ford ranger pickups tcases and alike but it's very hard to get an understanding of what its like from web pix.Comment

It is a 5 speed, but it has an overdrive unlike the ZF. Its overall ratio spread is close to that of the 420G. It's also very robust. The "normal" 265's have a 3.83 first gear and .81 fifth. I've heard that the versions used in the E30 M3 had a 3.38 first gear instead, but have not confirmed. Note that I am *NOT* talking about the dogleg box.Comment

Is that the same box that came in the old opel gsi's and some jags?
I have been looking around for one and they seem to be few and far between, and if they are around they're pricey! In terms of extending the centre shaft and choice of clutch/flywheel combo what would you suggest ?
cheers

You might try checking with the local breaking yards to see if they have a locator service that they use.
Here's an application chart for 265's:

drivetrain components are still rated by torque, not horsepower.

right I have found a 5 speed american type get rag out of a US M3 (non dogleg) just chatting money with the guy. This begs the question now as to what flywheel and clutch to use? Will the centre shaft reach?Comment

Can anyone supply me with a part number for the Bmw v8 Bellhousing? I have been searching online and realoem and just can't find it.

Don't know the part number... I just looked on the locator for a bellhousing for a '98 540i. You'll need the OBDII bellhousing because of the crank sensor low on the right side.Comment
