    Long Term M62b44 OBD2 Build

    Pardon the poor pictures.

Just picked up this '98 M62 the other day. The car it came out of had no body damage, and was taken in on an unknown mechanical issue. The yard didn't have the key, so mileage is unknown. The car looked very well taken care of, and the motor is extremely clean. I looks like the timing chain guides were just replaced. The oil looked brand new. I'm assuming the trans went out (auto car) after the owner had the expensive timing job done, and washed his hands of the car.

I had planned on piecing together an M60b44 setup, but if the timing chain guides and tensioners have just been replaced on this car, I'll stick with a plain M62b44. Called Technica down in GA about the ecu reflash they've got in the works for the M62 - they are in the late stages of testing and should have something ready soon.

I'll be taking it apart as soon as I can grab a stand to put it on. There's still a chance that there was some damage to the motor, but at $250 I'd still come out ahead.

Even the back side of the motor was clean.

I have a G420 held for me in Nashville, along with an M5 clutch / flywheel. I'm going to lighten the flywheel at work.

Because I'll be spending the entire year in Knoxville away from the shop, I'll likely be working on the car here instead of at the shop. Thankfully I'll have enough tools to work with.

Right now it's just slow parts accumulation. The current S52 setup is going to be sold. I'll likely pickup an e30 DD to use while the brown car is down. I plan on taking a page from Brucebe's book and modifying the oil pan to drop the motor down lower. I want it as far down and back as possible. Flaming river bits will be used to slim down the steering u joints.

Instead of worrying about fitting a booster, I'll be going boosterless with a compact wilwood master cylinder setup. By modifying the firewall and brake pedal, it should be possible to cram it close to the fuse box.

Out with the old, in with the v8, hell.

Only the last picture is the S52 that is currently in the car. The rest are all from the M62. I'm replacing the S52 with an M62.

??? Like Corey said, they're all M62 pictures, except the last one. Do you know what the inside of each motor looks like? They don't look very much alike inside at all, so I don't understand your post...

Smack dab in the middle of finals, so time to work on this is short.

Removed the wiring harness and intake manifold. All the knock sensors look great! The wiring harness looks like it was tampered with though. I'll try to get some pictures.

As soon as I get my hands on an e28 DD I have a buyer waiting for my swap. He wants to do it as early as next weekend if possible.

          I'm gonna miss you, S52 :(

WHat are you planning on doing with the EWS system? Is that software you're going to run able to delete it?

Apparently Technica Motorsport has something in the works for OBD2 M62 tuning. Should be able to delete EWS and other pesky things along with a tune. I need to give them a call again and see how it's progressing.

Slow goings right now, but about to pick up soon. Right now the car decided to munch on its getrag, but thanks to Robert K I'll be back on the road. I'll still have to DD the car for two weeks, at which point a friend of mine will be picking up my S52 setup, I'll be grabbing a 318iS for a daily, and the M62 goodness will start.

I have an S62 sitting next to it now - been short on time between school and internships. Nearing my last semester now. I'm also working in an engineering capacity for Chase Bays. Expect updates soon!

                    This is from Technica:

I’ve got most of that DME mapped out, but I never continued on with getting to the point of EWS delete. The demand for tuning on the DME runs about 1 request a year, and its not enough for me to justify the amount of time it takes. We’re working on E46 M3 turbo tuning on factory DME, etc.

I recall there was one guy who was doing EWS delete on the M62 boxes, but I don’t have any further information on who it was.

I’m sorry I could not be of further help to you...

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

I'm currently doing the same swap with a friend. Sourcing parts right now mostly. I guess my plan is to run full OBD2 and EWS at the moment, unless something else comes up.

My plans were to run M60 heads and convert to OBD1. If you can find an intact M60b40 it'd be worth considering

If one comes up locally, then that's probably what we will do, otherwise, I will be doing full OBD2/EWS.

Send the DME to Tino @ e30.de - he is able to delete all EWS-related stuff etc (M62 / S62 / S54). Doesn't cost too much..

He said he cannot delete EWS or chip tune the m62 4.4l DME.
