    Bleeding m60 coolant

I know the system is self bleeding, but I can't get flow to the radiator or heater core.

System mimics the stock 540i coolant system 100%, with the expansion tank in its appropriate location.

So the tank is filled to the brim, engine is running. No heat with heat turned on. No coolant to radiator. Feels like the radiator hoses are empty when squeezing.

Turned engine off after 3 min at risk of overheating.

Tonight im thinking of checking my tstat to see if the "expansion valve" in the tstat is facing 12 o clock position...I don't remember how I installed it , but I do remember not being cognizant of the direction of that valve.

Fixed. The tstat was correct. I just had to be patient. When I had that big "gulp" sound from the expansion tank. I knew that the tstat opened and then the heat started working. Right at halfway. Perfect.

Glad you got it figured out... its always scary filling a completely dry cooling system. Its even scarier when its all aluminum!

I can't get my coolant system bled. It overheats very quickly with the cap installed.

I removed the cap, started the car, and in about 3 minutes it will boil out over the resevoir for a few seconds, at which point I shut the car off, and then the level drops significantly. As it does, I add more water, until the level stabilizes (not allowing the system to suck any air from the reservoir). Start the car, and repeat. I've done it probably 100 times.

My heater core is getting (very) hot coolant, so the system seems to be flowing.

Well, I don't have an M60 but, I'm working on bleeding an M62 right now. It's kind of a pain.

I don't understand how it can be so difficult? I've never had ANY problems when bleeding BMW V8's, they are much, much easier than M5x engines that can sometimes cause bit of a trouble..

Just fill coolant level up, let engine warm until thermostat opens and then add coolant until amount is right. Test drive and check level next morning, end of story :)
