    plz help! (unsolved m62 mysteries)

So i have a few small questions for y'all (first post!)

Before I get banned and or bludgeoned, I hereby state that I have already used the search function, spent hours and years reading about m6x --> e30 swaps on 300mm.de, garagistic, r3v, e30tech, google, ect.

    I bought a m62b44 from a 97 740il (auto) for cheap yesterday, and ordered a #404 ecu

I plan to switch to a manual but haven't bought a trans, flywheel, or clutch yet.

My questions are: Do I need a different harness to use the 404???

What about the crank sensor differences? (can't tig, don't want to have it done really)

Has anyone here used an auto harness and could kindly enlighten me on what i can eliminate.

I'm making the assumption that once I get my c101 adapter made and main powers/grounds in place what ever is left over can be removed/ignored?

on to breaks: I can get complete m.c./booster/linkage + pedal system from the donor car (remote m.c.)
Looks like a lot can be used there? I read on (mikes???) build with all e34 parts all he had to do was slot the firewall and modify the pedal plus mount the m.c. to the sub-frame.

I need different manifolds right??? x5? Has anyone tried to fab their own headers? (I have lots of time and a welder)

Lastly is there any gents here that would like to share some rough dimensions on motor/trans mounts (going with a 6 gear so i can look like i'm in the movie fast&furious and shift 26 times in one drag race) j/k but i know the 6spd makes life harder but can't find a 5spd 280, 420g are widely avail it seems.

Source me a 5spd for less than $500?!?

Thanks for all your help.

-E38 brake linkage is no use for you, find E32 / E34.
-Autoharness can be used, you just need to cheat DME to think it's on "P" all the time. WDS will help you with that (spaghetticoder / google)
-I'm not sure how the earlier ECU's will work together with the newer wiring harness & sensors. WDS / Spaghetticoder will help you with that as well (just compare pinouts for earlier and later DME).

ugh, okay. 404 will work but needs a different crank trigger I believe. M60 had trigger on the front of the crank, m62 uses hall effect from flywheel. I took lots of pics of connectors on harness. I may post up ones i can't figure out, sound good?!?

Starting to wonder if i should leave my daily alone and buy another e30 to build. so this may switch to the back burner!

Something to consider. I've never had an engine swap that was completed in the time allotted... Or money either. ;)

have a bronzit 4dr shell on the way from a local r3ver for $700 if everything works out.

Had a bronzit 4dr as my first car (and first e30 love) so I will be sentimental. lol

Found a 5 spd for $300 on ebay decent cond. Trying to find flywheel + clutch still. but don't worry i know what to get, there is plenty of info on r3v about that subject...

OKAY so...a #404 DME will not allow the 4.4 to have all its power and will need a tune. Also have to fabricate a crank sensor to the front of the block and buy a m60 crank pulley, modify the harness...yadda yadda. This to me is a tie with having EWS as far as being a pain in the ass. So for now I cancelled my order for the 404.

Would it be easier to leave the harness alone and install EWS?!?! it won't be cheaper, sense I will have to buy the matching EWS setup with the #484 DME.

From what I can tell all the plugs for the EWS are on the engine harness near the DME?!?:?:

              #2

              #3

              #4

              #5

              #6

#7 (there are two pairs of these, they will connect to each other, they are on a very long strand from the harness by themselves)

EWS is cool anyways, until you lose your keys.

Of course its going to cost too much! But money is like manure, it doesn't do any good unless you spread it out. And at least I'm not like a lot of 19 year-olds and spend all my money on drugs and alcohol...

another thought...did they ever make a DME for the m62's that didn't have EWS?!?! What year was EWS introduced? motor is a 97.

This guide might help you along. (adding more as soon as we can).

                  THE SWAP GUIDE:
So you want more power in your E30? Well then an M6x engine is definitely a great way of giving your E30 some more punch. It gets down into the details, part numbe

As far as the whole using the 404 dme setup:
M62 using m60 dme and wiring You will need: M60 4.0 dme, M60 front chain cover (or front trigger mount cut from m60 front chain cover to be welded on your m62 front chain cover), front crank trigger wheel, alot of patience! This requires a bit more work than the other two methods, however; it does offer a nice advantag

Brake booster can be used from an e34:

Headers / exhaust manifold configurations for your e30 swap There are a couple options for exhaust manifolds. If you are planning to get the car BAR legal then you must stick to the exhaust manifold setup that came on your car. However, we will rank the benefits of each. Our recommendation: Use the 4.4 X5 exhaust manif

If I were to pull a dme from a junkyard with ews I bet i could do it for about $50, What all would I need? The ews box, dme, and ignition switch?

                      Just wonderin.

Build thread with lots of pics soon!

There's a lot of info on EWS around the forums, just use some time...

Matching EWS box, ignition switch "ring", chip from the key and DME is what you need. You can also get them coded afterwards if they're from separate cars but that requires someone who knows what he's doing with the DME coding stuff..

Picked up a m60b40 intake, crank trigger and tab, harmonic balancer, m60b40 auto engine harness, #404 DME, coolant resovoir, and a few small things from the junk yard today for $100!

                          My m62 can now be a 4.4L m60.

Looks like I wont need EWS!

$1070 invested so far, still need a clutch and radiator.

Trailering home the 4dr within a week, Build thread very soon!

I've spent a TON of time researching ways get get around the EWS in my 97 M62 swap. I came to the conclusion that EWS may be the only way to go. I've talked to a few people that tried to get around it an it didn't go well.
