    5 Speed Driveshaft

I figured I would make a thread to be useful in the future. I am using a 5 speed on my m60 and am having trouble finding an e36 328i driveshaft. Which I think is correct.

There are a lot of e36 325i driveshafts at very resonable prices but when I check real oem they are different part numbers.

    328i length 1492mm
    325i length 1512mm

Such a small difference I would think you could loosen the slip joint and adjust accordingly and safely.

Does anybody know the differences in these? Will either work?

If you notice the differences in the lengths, the 328i shaft is the shorter of the 2... the longer one simply won't fit, it's too long. E30 M3 is another shaft you can source. The key is the length of 1492mm, the larger Flex Disc flange and the 4 bolt rear flange. BTW, I should have your X5 plate ready to ship tomorrow... I'll let you know.

This is good info. So what you are saying is the E36 328i (manual?) shaft is a direct bolt-in for the E30 M6x/ZF 5-speed swap?

Yes. You may want to read through some of the older threads in this sub-forum to learn about all kinds of direct bolt-on parts that make life easier ;)

Yes, either the E36 328i manual shaft with a 4 bolt rear flange or the E30 M3 shaft is a direct bolt-on unit. The E36 shaft must have an E30 center bearing installed on it, which is also a direct fit to the E36 shaft. Other than that, they are both usable...

heh, yeah i tend to forget things pretty easily, I have read through all of the threads here, but a long time ago, and not to any depth. I will read again for sure though, as my swap gets closer.

hurrying the best I can on a nearly nonexistant budget!!

To specify a little on what I am doing, I am first helping a friend do an M60B44 hybrid build (read: I'll end up doing most of it myself in my garage) and then I will do my hybrid build for the E28 520i.

So far we have everything collected for the 1st hybrid build, and the 4.4L is torn down to the block and rotating assembly, with B40 parts standing by.

"Direct bolt-on" is not always true, it always depends on the engine position that is not fixed anywhere..

E30 M3 driveshaft is also pretty suitable, as mentioned earlier. E36 M3 driveshaft (3.0) is the same as in 328i.

                      E30 325e (up to '87), 320iS and 324td have also the same driveshaft ;)
