    M60 coolant issues

    Hi all!

    Ive got a m60b40 e30 drift car but always getting coolant problems! 3 fast laps and its in the red, i run a 30mm core good size ally rad with twin fans, im in the process of upgrading fans and rad now but im wondering if its more than that? Like water flow, ive worked out from reading other posts on here that im running e38 water pump with 3 outlets on 1 goes to expansion tank and two go to rad, on the water manifold im sure i have 3 or 4 2 go to heater matrix but is there a flow?

    Any help would be great thanks alot

        A local's m30 swapped e30 does the same thing when sideways. After we finish building his forged Gen Coupe motor, we will be back at that car to diagnose it. I have a feeling it's the lack of airflow over the radiator and having a large motor in the bay. All new coolant parts, over-sized radiator, thermostat deleted, huge pusher fan in his case.

        This round I am planning on adding capacity to the system, a nice large aluminum tank behind the front valance might help, but won't know for a few weeks.

        Interested to see what you find.

          We run too with lifted bonnets and both have the same problem with both, lack of air flow will be part of the problem but im just wondering if ive got a conflicting water system

                ive just took another look at my coolant hoses ive got 2 on the water manifold which are going in to the heater matrix and then ive got the 3rd pipe off the water pump going to the bottom of a expansion tank and a small pipe from my rad (no seal in cap) to the top of expansion tank....

                the question is would that flow?

                is the 3rd hose of water pump a return or does that push water?

                if anyone can shed some light please let me know thanks

                  You can check the original house routings from e.g. www.bmwfans.info

                  The M60 is such a huge engine in small bay like E30 that it requires quite a lot of cooling power when being abused :)

                  There are three things to do;
                  1) Ducting - block all other routes for air to enter the engine bay but through the radiator / fan. E.g. plastic flaps etc.. help with this.
                  2) Increase air flow through radiator (more powerful fan)
                  3) Increase system size (though this won't help you much if the other things are not being taken care of as this will just mean that warming the coolant up will take a bit longer time). Meaning e.g. custom-made radiator, 30mm is not very thick and aluminium is not the best material..

                    Yea i know its always going to be warm im in the process of upgrading to a 50mm rad with twin fans and a good couling, i was just doubting the ways everything was plumbed in just incase i wasnt getting a good flow,

                    Thanks for the info
