M60 check your oil pump bolts

Sorry for the caps title but I thought this was pretty important and hopefully it can be stickyed for future swappers. I decided to check the oil pump bolts on my m60 and make sure they were still torqued. Well I pulled the oil pan and found a nice surprise....

My chain is also way out of adjustment probably from the oil pump flopping around for so long. I'm glad I checked this otherwise my engine would have been toast slightly after all my hard work.

That's common on m60's, all of mine were loose as well. It's good to pull the lower pan once a year and check them.

Yeah I read about it that's why I did it but I never saw it mentioned here.

Have you checked your x5? I'm thinking about pulling my pan on mine next oil service just for good measures....

I haven't. From what I understand, this was only an issue for engines made prior to 1998 (so all m60's and only the early m62's). Probably wouldn't hurt to check though!

Mine were loose on my 2001 540, I'd check them if I were you.

Ouch will have to check mine that I just started driving (94' M60). Is the oil pump fully accessible just from the bottom pan?

Yes it is, there are a million bolts holding the pan on so get some sort of power/ air tool handy

Thank you man for the heads up :eeek:, you saved me $$$ in future damages. Three bolts in my oil pan aswell :(, also all the bolts on the oil pump were going down as well :( . Still wondering how one of the bolts came to the pan and not the engine, on the second picture behind that plastic cover was his original place . Engine in question is M60B40 '94.
