Didn't Alpina design the x5 4.6 and 4.8is engines? I wonder if it is similar. If it is I have a bare 4.8is x5 block.....

4.8iS has N62 engine, which is totally different to M6x engines..

To my understanding largest-displacement M62 is the 4.6 unit (which you can of course stroke with S62 crankshaft to 4.8 litres).. ;)


... with a second look, the ebay-item Alpina 4.8 seems indeed to be based on M62. Maybe it's 4.6 bore with S62 crank ?

That engine is an Alpina built m62, it's basically a stroked 4.6, and I believe it had some additional head work and a different intake manifold. 4837 cc, 93mm bore, 89mm stroke, 375 hp / 375 lbs ft.

The 4.6 is 93mm x 85mm, 340hp. It's not just a bored and stroked m62b44. It has an Alpina spec'd block, crank, pistons, cams, etc... It also uses the m60 intake manifold.

The normal BMW 4.4 is 92mm x 82.7mm.

I think it would make more sense to do an s62 then either a 4.6 or 4.8, unless you find a great deal on one. The 4.6 is a BMW engine (spec'd by Alpina), so at least you can get parts fairly easily, although expensive, but the 4.8 is an Alpina built engine, you'd need to go through them for parts. The last complete 4.6 engine I saw for sale was $5k, and this is the first 4.8 I've ever seen for sale. If you really want to steer clear of an s62, I'd think boring, sleeving, and camming an m62b44, while using a s62 crank and custom pistons, would be more affordable to build and maintain. You could get ~5.0 liters, so you'd have a better midrange then the high strung s62.

You know a lot more about the technical details than I do, but I agree that an s62 would probably by a more reasonable option than this. I think robertk had two s62s for sale for 2grand.

How do you figure that? BMW built the S62 for the broadest torque band they could get. The double VANOS makes sure of that.

If they were going for maximum power, they would have used a slightly smaller bore and turned it to 8,000 RPM instead of 7.

Even a stock non-vanos m62 matches the mid range power of an s62.
