Motor and transmission should be coming out this weekend if I can get a hold on my friends hoist.

How much are you limiting yourself to spending?

Since I'm sourcing most of my parts through carpart, I'm looking to spend around $1000+ for the motor and transmission. Whatever else, I don't really have a limit.

Borrowing my buddy's hoist for a while. I would have drained all the fluids today but had to help my dad power wash some shit around the house. Motor and transmission still on target to come out this Saturday or Sunday.

Wow, that is a good bit. You should definitely be able to find a motor and trans for that price. I can't wait to see this done, it would be nice to prove that a M60 swap isn't much more involved than a simple M50.

you definitely don't need a lift or a shop to do this swap.
But does it make it much more nicer! :)

E.g. welding exhaust is quite shitty when laying on the ground the exhaust hanging 5" off your face.. Been there, done that.

M60 is much, much more complicated swap than M50 (which is more or less direct bolt-on). With M60, basically everything in the engine bay needs to be relocated + you need to modify exhaust quite a lot.

Just bought Frank's M60 writeup. Very useful and full of great tips, highly recommend it to anyone planning on doing the same swap.

                            You may find this helpful:

So you want more power in your E30? Well then an M6x engine is definitely a great way of giving your E30 some more punch. The engines are cheap, the mounts are made available by Garagistic, the weight penalty is minimal, and the fun is endless. This guide is extremely detailed! It gets down into the details, part numbe

We keep updating it as it is a work in progress.

Working on this myself into my '87 325e!!! Also doing it in my driveway!!! Got the engine in my shed about 3/4's torn down to reseal and clean. Do some checking around for the engine and trans. I pulled a complete M60 with all accessories along with auto trans out of a 740iL for less than $500. Sold the auto for $250 and purchased the 5-speed for $500 shipped to my door. Can definitely do this on a tight budget!! I have spent about $800 between 3 different parts suppliers for all the seals and some other misc parts I need for the engine. Most likely going with Garagistic for his mounts and pedal mount to make my life that much easier!! I am going boosterless and deleting the ABS as well!! I'll try to get some pics and start a build thread on mine as I go too!! Keep at it!!!
