    M62tub44 Questions

I recently picked up an M62tub44 to swap into an e30 shell, and I know everyone says they're the worst V8 for whatever reason (water cooled alt or timing chain/guides/tensioners that "only" last 200k?) but people who live in the bmw dead zone need to take what they can get.

I've been searching for a week for info on the m62tu, but almost every result is from a m62nv or someone using m60 heads.

I bought the engine without a DME, the plan is to buy a DME and send it to Dave/MMW to get EWS and emissions crap flashed out of it when he can. The problem is, I can't find any info on what DME the M62tu uses and I'm scared of buying the wrong DME without even knowing.

Question 1: What DME(s?) work for the M62tu motor?

Question 2: I would like to run an M60 manifold, and have a non-drive-by-wire throttle body. Is it possible to do this? Which TB/TPS will work?

Question 3: I know the water cooled alt won't be necessary, and I would like to swap to a normal air cooled alt. Do I just need an alternator and the M60 timing cover to replace the m62 one? Any other parts involved or the need to shorten/lengthen/reroute the serp belt?

Question 4: I need EWS flashed, Who currently does this and emission systems deletes for a decent price for the m62tu?

Question 5: What other "while you're in there" maintenance would you definitely do other than a new timing chain, tensioner(s) and chain guides?

Question 6: Recommend me a lightweight flywheel, currently looking at the clutchnet one.

I'm sorry if any of this has been covered, feel free to link and call me a dumbass if it has.

    Thanks!

You need to seriously think about how you are going to handle any and all the electrical components before you decide on flashing the dme.

Obviously you can't run m60b40 or m62b44 harness because the m62tu is electronically different. (2x vanos, electronic tb among other things).

So, you are going to either have to live all the accessories and sensors as they are on the m62tu and have the matching m62tu ( believe its 484 iirc, i think i may have a photo of it in my 2003 540i rebuild thread here on the forum) dme flashed. OR you have a SHIT load of work ahead of you in trying to conver the m62tu into anything else "easily".

The timing covers "swap" but you have to think about other parts as well, gaskets/chains/electronics differences.

    #5 - all gaskets/hoses/all timing parts/valley pan/vanos solenoids/housings/check valves...m62tu = $ pit.

I don't think I'm going to bother with the alternator conversion, I'll just live with the water cooled alt. If it ever fails, I should only have to replace it once, and they don't look as expensive as everyone says.

I would like to keep all the factory sensors, but delete the SAP, post-cat O2 sensors, and other emissions equipment.

Other than that, I would love to replace the drive by wire pedal potentiometer with a potentiometer TPS to be able to have drive by cable, but I don't know which TPS (if any) would mimic the proper signal. I also don't know if the electronic throttle body sends any info back to the DME or if I could just leave it all unplugged.

      Thanks for the input!

In other words, its not worth the effort, just install the damn pedal. Works for me.
