I'm using the ZF five speed with my m60, with a UUC flywheel and Clutchmasters FX100 m52 clutch kit. 144k on the engine, 109k on the trans, 10k on the clutch/flywheel. That 10k has been rather, well, I don't want to say abusive, but I haven't been driving like my Grandmother does.
If I'm in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and probably 5th, below 1500 RPM's, and get on the gas, I get a pretty gnarly rattle from the transmission area. It sounds like the input shaft is slapping around, or something of that sort. It's most noticeable when I'm cruising around in 3rd gear. If I slow down to 5-10mph or so, and get back on the gas in third, the engine has plenty of torque to accelerate the car without bogging, but the rattling it makes is pretty bad. And it seems to be getting worse over the past 1k miles or so. I don't notice it in 1st gear. There is no rattle or noises at idle, with the clutch engaged or disengaged. And no noises under load above 1500 RPM's.
The only other clutch related things I'm dealing with, is a pretty serious shaking of the entire car as I leave off the clutch from a stop. The whole car shudders. Generally does it only when cold. Also, I can feel a very slight 'pulsing' in the clutch pedal, only when it's cold, and only with the slightest bit of pressure on the pedal, basically just resting my foot on it. I think these issues are just a function of the aftermarket clutch, and unrelated to my rattle.
I've been trying to avoid low RPM/high load usage lately as I don't want to break my unicorn 530i trans, if that is the issue.
Is this a typical input shaft bearing issue? If so, are the ZF's bearings replaceable by most transmission shops? Or, is this a clutch/TOB/pilot bearing issue of some sort?
