exhaust manifold for Calif BAR ?

Hi I'm doing alot of reading from some very good threads on here in preparation for M60B40 swap into 86 I
    Anyone have a Calif BAR'd m60 swap ?
Wondering what exhaust manifolds you used. Stk dual outlets or X5 single?.
I believe the Calif 'rules' say stock configuration components through the cats. for year of engine. I'm planning to use a OBD1 94/95
    Any input is appreciated
    Thanks

Only CA BAR legal is same as on the e34/e32 M60B40...anything else isn't legal.

It has to be the same equipment used with the engine... So if you use X5 manifolds because that's what fit, then you need to use X5 engine (only M62TU, right?) and DME (and all the other emissions equipment)

I don't think you're allowed to modify the manifolds at all, but that may be up to the ref who certifies your car.

So, are they going to have a little book of pictures of the various engines that came in each car and the nuances that make them different (X5 vs E34/32 exhaust manis)?

Thats the other problem however. CA Bar states you cannot use an SUV/truck engine into a passenger car. So you cant say its an x5 engine.

The late model E39 540i vanos manifolds are the same iirc.

But, yes, getting M60 through bar is basically a lotto. There are NO headers out that that fit w/o modifications...so it will be up to the REF to care that you cut/welded it a bit.

Ref won't have any problems figuring out that e34/e34 manifolds are different from e39/x5 manifods...I mean they are totally different.

hi, I am also looking in to doing a bar'd m60 swap.
I was wondering what modification you would have to do to the car/steering and/or the m60 headers to make it work?
I have searched around a bit for this but I can not find anything on it. someone must have done this?

You have to cut/weld the OBD2 manifolds to fit. Search again, this has been covered many times.

Some pictures/instructions on the modifications needed:

Headers / exhaust manifold configurations for your e30 swap There are a couple options for exhaust manifolds. If you are planning to get the car BAR legal then you must stick to the exhaust manifold setup that came on your car. However, we will rank the benefits of each. Our recommendation: Use the 4.4 X5 exhaust manif

This setup will clear shipping however it WILL NOT PASS BAR!

So wait, I'm building my car in NYS which is soon to be taking on more of the CARB regs. For example we can no longer re-use catalytic converters or buy third party cats. It must be OEM, whatever that means these days.

So moving to California (fiance and I would like to in the next year or so) I won't be able to register my car as a result of these minor modifications?

I should specify that I am using an M62 with E39/X5 headers with as little modification as possible. I know it is said that they must be modified or they won't work but does this mean I should quit now?

So here is what I know about getting a car bar'd from getting a m50 e30 bar'd in california (I might be wrong.) EVERYTHING has to be stock from the MAF all the way to the cats (you can use CA certified cats, I using walkers on the m50 right now) but the m62 might be a lot harder to get bar'd in CA because it is OBD2, which means you CAN NOT OBD1 convert it and get it bar'd in CA legally at lease. I have seen guys pass off a s52(OBD2) as a s50(OBD2) because the bar referee couldn't tell the difference. but if you get caught doing that you are f@#ked. So in my opinion the only doable option in CA for a BMW v8 is a M60. Again I might be wrong, this is what I know from my experience.
