I'd say good luck. Some of these CAL. M60 swaps are track only, and there may be a few 'handshake' smog test stations around. Can also be dependent on your location in CA. some of the less populated areas have less stringent requirements for the smog test.Testing is req'd every 2 yrs. I'm in SF Bay area, but a BAR cert is same across the state.
Since the M60 manifolds don't fit without heavy massaging - modified equipment-it could be iffy, and as said X5 are best buut single vs dual outlet, truck etc..I'm still contemplating giving it a go
So a BAR inspection on this swap in and E30 is like Clint Eastwood said --you feeling lucky ???

I only speaking from the experience with my m30b35 swap that I went through with BAR...they look at exhaust, that is one thing they will not skip over, and intake side. Basically all the emission stuff they look and compare with papers.

I didn't have any issues with m30b35 swap, but the m60 swap is different. If you can fit the stock e32/e34 m60 manifolds, try it. People go with m62 e39/x5 manifolds because they are compact, but they have cats welded to them that you'll have to cut off and re-shape the pipes , no way around that. Example - http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...&postcount=194

      So, it's a small gamble.

Passing m62 is the same deal as passing s52 as mentioned above.

Hmm, could you pass the Hartge H26 exhaust manifold as stock? Technically it was stock =D

Oops... yeah, I forgot about the truck/car goofiness when I wrote that.

The big question is not "Can someone who knows tell the difference", but rather "Can the ref tell what is correct for what engine you CLAIM to have".

IOW... it's all about what you tell the ref you have. If you tell him it's from a '94 540i, then he shouldn't be able to find evidence confirming anything you have is from something else.

If he can't find a part number on the manifold that tells him you have the "wrong" manifolds, how is he going to know you have the wrong manifolds?

He DOES have to be able to verify that the catalysts match the engine you claim... which basically dictates what manifolds you can use, because those manifolds have to mate up to the unmodified catalyst...

Unless you can get a ref who has some common sense and understands that rerouting pipes is NOT an emissions disaster.

Remove all external indications that the block is a 4.4 (IE, grind off the "4.4" cast on the side of the block, remove VIN stickers showing it's not from the year you claim, etc.) and get the swap smogged as an M60 (OBDI).

HAS ANYONE TRIED BUILDING A 3-JOINT STEERING SHAFT THAT GOES AROUND THE MANIFOLD?
