When I unwrapped the engine, the oil filler
Cap was off..just sitting in a crevice. Not sure as to how long it was like that though. Surely people aren't that dumb to leave the oil cap off are they?
On another note, I found a 80k mile m60 about 30 minutes away from me. I'll be pulling the valve covers before I buy it though..

Try pulling the cams and see if that will clean up with scotchbrite. Flash rust on cam lobes can frequently clean up and be run just fine. Even pitting will run fine as long as it's on the base circle and not where the lobe lifts the valve.
I'd only do that as a last resort, however. Can you take it back and look at another engine while you're there? IE, pull the valve covers for inspection before you leave with it.

The engine *SHOULD BE* sealed well enough that being rained on doesn't hurt it. After all, it gets sprayed down whenever the car is driven in the rain. So whoever pulled it had to have left SOMETHING wide open to the weather for a while.
Engine swaps can be done cheaply, but need to be done carefully.
And if you check www.car-parts.com for '94 740i engines in North Carolina, you'll find that $650 is right in the middle of the pack in terms of price.

Honestly, this is about the worst luck I've ever seen any one individual experience. Take it all back on account of engine is fucked. If you're not interested in continuing, cut out before you invest any more. If the rolling chassis you now have is in good shape you should be able to get a few hundred for it but it'd be best if it were running under its own power. Sounds like your best bet is to buy a running M20 (witness it running) put it back in and enjoy the car. Don't forget to do the timing belt when you buy said M20.

Is that rust covering the cam lobes & lifters?? That bitch must've been in the yard for a good long while.
All that aside, sorry to hear about the bad luck bro. You might wanna consider completely rebuilding something in the future... I'd be way too anxious to slap a 10+ year old mystery engine in my car. Either that or buy a running 540 with a destroyed auto tranny (don't know how things are in NC, but in Baltimore we've got sooooo many old luxury cars in states of disrepair [the city specifically])
