Probably one of the more stupid purchases I've made...

So yeah... I've been complaining that my car doesn't have enough power lately... so I bought this:

I can't tell if it's a clone of CXRacing's old designs or if it's their leftover inventory... but whatever, I think it'll be worth it even if I have to modify it (lol who am I kidding, OF COURSE it's gonna have to be modified :D/:( )

In any case, I only bought it since I found some installed pictures online. No chance in hell the drivers' side manifold will work, figure worst comes to worst I can just use the shorty I currently have over there.

I took some measurements from the picture and using the valve cover for reference, adjusted the measurements to scale. The outermost portion of the turbine housing is roughly 14" from the outer edge of the valve cover. For those of you with 302's, you know how tight that's gonna be... the turbine housing will probably be either touching the wheel well or it'll be damn close.

On the bright side, I've got a different alternator bracket than the pictured one (gives me an extra 2-3"), so if I really have to I can torch the welds off the primaries, cut em down a bit and reel the turbo in a little closer to the block. I really don't want to though, because I'm pretty sure that down pipe will mostly work with this swap.

In the end though, even if I can only use the passenger side manifold it's still worth the $200 for me. Also, I can weld some extra brackets up so the typical cheap ebay stainless steel doesn't crack on me.

I plan on running the weakest wastegate spring I can get until I get a 2nd diff mount, DSS axles, TKO trans and a dart block/forged rotating assembly. I'm banking on the stock stuff holding up under 4-5psi (all ARP fasteners) but will hopefully make an extra 50-100whp/tq.

hehehe yeah, all I can hope for is that my block doesn't split right down the middle... at least for a few events anyway.

i've already decided to throw gang signs and make it rain on my car though, so it's all good

Fuck yeah, any EFI system to support this is gonna be in the ballpark of $2k. All I need for a blowthrough (from what I understand anyway) is a marine style seal for the accelerator pump and replace the hollow brass floats with neoprene ones or something like that. I've got a wideband already so tuning shouldn't be too too crazy difficult. Will probably need a walboro too or something but it's looking like I can do a bare bones setup for less than a G.

Oh yeah, thought I'd reach out to you about doing it since you're the only guy I know who had a turbo 5.0 e30. How big was the turbo and how much boost did it take to make the rods come apart? Did you use ARP rod bolts or was it all stock? Imma try to stay under 6k rpms as I've read on a lot of Ford forums this'll really help with block longevity.

Google "Hanger18 blow through carb" or something like that, if you haven't already.

My turbo was really small since I wanted it to spool really early. It was a 62mm turbo off ebay. I had a 9psi spring in the wastegate and the engine was stock with fresh head gaskets and head studs.

Hrm. I was planning on maybe running no wastegate, just having a bypass. As in still running the pipe before the tubine housing and to the downpipe. Figure that way the most it'll make is 4-5psi. Lower the chances of grenading in my face. Also, that's the kind of ebay special I was planning on. When were you hitting full boost? 2.5-3k rpms?

Good read there, though mine's a edelbrock/weber. Slightly different carbs, lol. Will be good to have as a reference for when I switch to a Holley - so far haven't had any issues tracking with the edelbrock, though it's not perfect.

Jalopi, yea I was full boost by 2800rpm. I liked it but that motor was toast. It would blow tons of blue smoke and it got annoying
