help identifying sensor located under driver's side bumper

Hi all, I've got this '85 325e that I'm trying to bring back to life. I've found this sensor under the driver's side bumper which I'm not sure what it does. The wires have been disconnected for years and the car was running fine that way. Can anyone help in identifying what this sensor is for? Thanks in advance!
