Is there a way to see if an expansion valve is good before installing it? I saw people use a can of compressed air upside down to freeze the temp bulb when installed on the vehicle to see changes to the a/c gauges when hooked up. If I do that to the expansion valve out of the car should I see any movement inside the expansion valve?

Testing a/c expansion valve out of the vehicle?

hmm its a good question,
I was intrigued by your post, so i dug out an old tx valve. It used to work and then my AC stopped working due to a gas leak. so i dunno, the TX valve is probably fine? I put in the freezer for 30mins and it didnt move, -18c not cold enough it seems. I also put it for 5 seconds in front of an open LPG cylinder from the bbq, aimed at the bulb. it got very cold. still didn't move. So maybe the TX valve is stuffed, or its still not cold enough. I have not tried the can, worth a go though if you have one, not sure id especially buy one for testing though - pending price.
The valve also looks "closed" when its not due to it being such a small orifice anyway. so might be hard, or impossible, to see it closing anyway.
A new one was only like 80AUD for me. so 60usd. I just bought a new one for peace of mind. its a pain in the ass to change, you don't want to do it twice. (well it was on my RHD car, with the steering wheel in the way, maybe not so bad in LHD).Last edited by e30davie; 09-05-2021, 06:51 PM.
