It is not getting charged at all with the car idling or if the RPMs are higher. The battery light stays on even with the car running. I redid all my grounds and the cables going to the starter and from the starter to the battery. I also installed a new voltage regulator and cleaned the alternator and mounting bracket. I found that the exciter wire (the smaller blue D+ wire) is only getting 2.2V and if I supply the exciter with 12V the battery starts charging. Given that the battery light comes on can I assume that the blue wires wiring is good? And if not where can I trace this wire back to find possible faults? Thanks!

If the battery light turns on with the key ON then the connection is good and it should charge the battery. Which model E30 do you have?"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

I would look at the ETM for your particular car and compare it to the swap harness. Was it always like this since the swap? or did it occur all of a sudden one day?"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj
