    Driver door lock cylinder issues

    Hey folks,

The lock on the drivers door doesn’t work. I can insert the key and turn it either way but it feels hard and crunchy and I think it’s bending/twisting the key. Locking the car through that door does not activate the central locking either, though it will lock just the door and even then the lock on the inside doesn’t lower very much. I have to lock the car through the passenger door for all the doors to lock and the lock on the drivers side lowers flush into the door.

According to the vehicle’s records, the lock cylinder has been replaced and recoded 3 times by BMW over the course of its life. Is that what I’ll need to do again, and doesn’t that seem like too many times to replace the lock cylinder? Could something else be causing this?

    thank you,

    David

There's a ball detent in there that wears out and causes what you describe. Not sure if it's NLA but I've bought complete rebuild kits for the drivers door for about $22. The new ones replace the ball w a cylinder shape bearing which avoids the issue. Note also if your central locks are still working it's easier to get to the trunk lock :)

Thank you for the response! Bummer you’ve dealt with it too. Could you point me in the direction of the rebuild kit or a part number so I know what to order? Is there also a DIY?

      Thank you!
