My e30 has had a m44 swap and the previous owner said he couldn't get the temp gauge to work properly, that its incompatible with the e30, is there anyway that I can get the temp gauge to show the car is warm, rather than just having to guess by leaving the car running for a while?

Actually, I just had a look at my engine and it’s already got that type of sensor to the coolant line, was a bit confused at first, but as mine has a electric fan it has an electric fan and the wiring looks the same to the fan from the sensor, anyway, the sensor on this engine is a 4pin as I can see 4 wires to it, but the e30 is 2, confused up to here, should I give a go replacing the sensor or leave it as I’m not wanting to open the dash cluster.

I've never had much luck with the temp gauge in my e30, standard everything. seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it shows what seems to be correct in the middle, but most of the time it hangs around 20% of the gauge. I suspect its in the cluster itself. I ended up putting a VDO temp guage hanging below the stereo with its own separate sender. it looks alright all things considered and its never given any problems.
