Help Removing Wiper Cover

I am beginning inspection for intermittent wipers and I've been wrestling with the stupid black motor cover seen in the picture.

What am I missing, it seems like it should just flex out of the way but here I am...

I got that cover off and have the blower fan removed, flappers disconnected etc and I am still struggling. Is anyone familiar with wipers? Is there an early/late car difference?

I am not seeing the same thing that the Bentley manual shows, or online. Every resource shows a nut facing upward that attaches the motor to the rest of the linkage. The assembly won't remove all together so I know I have to figure out how to detach motor from linkage.

For example look at this e30zone write up. My linkage is 180 degrees opposite what they are showing in pictures.

There are other photos showing what that link shows. On mine when the black cover is lifted it has the black plastic electrical terminal thingy with the 2 contact sweepers on the underside of it once the clips are removed and the piece is tilted away to look.

I just don't understand what is up... was my car assembled wrong?? Looking at it seems like it would be impossible but here I am riding the struggle bus.
