    Still gets hot?? What next??

    1991 318is has been running past the 3/4 mark. I've done changes in moderation:

    1- flushed radiator, still ran hot
    2- changed thermostat, still ran hot
    3- replaced radiator, still runs hot and now the heater doesn't even get hot??

    Upper rad hose gets hot but lower barely gets warm. what next...the water pump??

    water pump, what about the fan clutch?

    also, check the aux fan, if its seized, it could be blocking airflow through the radiator

        sure your guage is accurate?

        my fan clutch is going out, but above 40mph you get enough airflow that it shouldn't matter. you're overheating at higher speeds, too?

          I have been having the same problem with my 325i. New water pump, thermostat, and flushed the system and it still overheats.

            I had the same problem... i took radiator out... brought it to a shop and had the check if it was clogged and had them flush it and put a protective coating on it...
            changed clutch fan, thermostat, aux fan resistor since it wasn't working

            But it turns out after i changed the Temp sender... it went back to normal would only sit at 1/4 to 1/2 all the time... 1/2 in traffic...

            Try changing the Temp sender.... its like no more than 25 dollars.... better than buying a clutch fan that is 60-70 bucks...

              also to test your temp sender... have the car warmed up... and then turn off... then turn on car to position 2... and unplug the sender and if the needle goes down to cooler temp then its faulty... i think thats what it says in the bentley manual...

                I'm thinking my next step is water pump or maybe temp sensor but why doesn't it generate heat for my heater after I replaced the radiator? Heater was working fine b4 the radiator??

                  Someone told me that you need to bleed the coolant system, thats why heater isn't working. I had the same problem. But mine was that the waterpump pully inside was broken in half and my radiator was clogged. SO yeah

                    Yeah, I'm running NO fan when driving around town unless I need it, then I flip on the aux fan and that cools things down. I never see the needle touch the middle mark.

                    Maybe blocked coolant passages or a faulty sender.

                      It runs fine now....I just needed to bleed the system of bubbles!! I thought I did it the 1st time and got them all I but guess not. Heater works now. Temp needle only goes between 1/4 and 1/2 now. I guess I'll need to tell my som he won't need that water pump he ordered...at leat for now.

                          Hate to say but you did not read write and understand the english languge in the Bentley manual when changing fluid in radiator correct? ;) A step a lot of people forget is to boil the thermostat to make sure it functions. Most naturally assume that it works and is not defective.
