Simple question. Why is 2nd gear the notchiest out of all 5?

Care to elaborate? I realize its worn synchros but what creates the "notchy" feel?

what makes it near-impossible to shift into second somtimes @ high rpm load?
as in WOT in first, 6500RPM's, shift to second and it feels like its a wall you're trying to shift into..
it happens every now and then.Comment

Probably worn and/or broken tranny or motor mounts. When at high RPM's and WOT, this gives the tranny or motor a lot of chance to flex and move around, making it very hard to find the shift gates.Originally posted by Kruzenwhat makes it near-impossible to shift into second somtimes @ high rpm load?

you could also do a fluid change, toss some Redline in there, that should make it shift a tad easier.
Parts are around 200 bucks, if you do a short shifter when you rebuild the linkage, although seeing as you don't dig notchyness, then you may want to keep the stock throw.

The tranny mounts are easier and I paid $8 x2 for them. All you have to do is put a jack under the tranny to support it and lower the tranny brace. That could all be done in 30 minutes I'd say. For the motor mounts, you have to loosen them and then jack the motor up a bit from the oil pan to get the mounts out. They are about $15 a piece I'd guess. That took me about an hour to do the first time I did it.Comment

TJ has it right. I'd like to add that if your mounts are bad or you even think they are then replace them. They can cause a lot of other problems if you don't.
