I think that is the answer anyone gets when asking about any kind of major mod...
    There's a reason for that.

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

yeah but it can work damm good for his needs, since he is saying he don't want crazy numbers, he can get a very small t3 with mid or big size compressor side or just get a GT28 RS "BB" turbo for earlier spool, with a good setup he can do it nice!

The M42 may be .1 L smaller than the M44 but it is fa rmore solid. I had an E36 318is for about 6 months, and was researching putting more power to the wheels relatively inexpensively. I know the E30 and E36 M42's are somewhat different....namely the intake manifold. The E30 one is better in my opinion, but that's neither here nor there. The Downing Atlanta Supercharger kit sold for the E36 318is by www.understeer.com was $3150 for the whole deal. It ran around 7psi and was not intercooled....which I'm not sure is a good idea for you since I guess you don't have a knock sensor. An M44 with the DASC dynoed 190rwhp and around 210rwtq I think. I don't rmemeber the torque number quite so vividly. Anyway....jsut another option. Not so much waiting for spool, so plenty of low end which is what 4 bangers lack. Think about it.

GT28RS isn't exactly a little turbo tho. It's called a big boy turbo for a reason, Dub and Audi guys are gettin 300+ to the wheels with that turbo. Of course they do spike at like 25lbs.

yeah, niether is a big or mid turbo, please refresh my memory, wans't 1.8L thw Audi and VW engines, isn't this buddy a 2.7 Eta? with some mod can move his red line to 5800RPM or so...?

The answer is pretty easy, too small will fuck up his daily driver...my .02
