    M10 Chain Or Belt?

    Ive got an 84 318i M10. jst wondrin if the timming its driven by a belt or chain and how often does it need to be changed?

    chain... you don't really have to change it unless it's damaged or something.

      The M10 has a chain, that doesn't need to be changed. But keep in mind, there is a chain tensioner that does. It shoots off the side of the chain cover and is a "lifter" and a spring.

          Not really sure. I'd do it about every 100k miles at least.

            OT but does anyone know how to do the valves on the m10?? its ticking.

              Same as an M20 and M30 with eccentrics



              Do them with the engine cold, clearence for both valves is 0.20mm or 0.008"

                you have to worry about the chain guides... if they break, they get wedged inside the chain and cause havok.... my dad replaced his chain and guides at 250k miles.
