Mine has a blower behind the rear seat, where Jordan's subwoofer driver is. My question is how does it know that teh top is down? I don't see any switches.

        I don't think it does..

Why in god's name would you need the rear window defroster if your top is down anyways? :P

Don't need it, accidentally hit the button once, didn't hear the blower, thought it was broken, checked with top up, worked!

I therefore deduced it has a switch that disables it when the top is down.

You do, unless for some insane reason the previous owner decided he was never going to defreost the rear window, ever again.

Mine will stay on when the top is down. I have an older convertible and I don't think it has the switch.

It's behind your seat. Remove the rear backrest and you'll see a big horn looking thing.
