    Fuel Gauge not working

Well my gas gauge is stuck at full on the 325ic. Every now and then it goes down to half full then goes back to full.

Any common failure modes on these?

My first suspicion would a problem with the fuel level sensors or a short in the wiring from the cluster to the sensors.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Same thing as mine. I haven't gotten into it yet since I'm still working on the engine swap. I'll post up if you haven't found an answer before I get around to it.

check the ground nut on the back of the cluster if it is loose it can make the fuel gauge "dance"

Keep in mind late cars have two sensors.

where on the back of the cluster is this ground?

The grounds for the cluster are via the connectors. That ground ultimately terminates at a bolt on the inside firewall just to the left the steering column a few inches below the top of the dash.

A bad ground for the cluster will affect all of the cluster instruments. If only the fuel gauge is affected the problem will be in the sensor(s), wiring to same, or the connection between the fuel gauge and the main PCB in the cluster.

One on each side of the gas tank, one on it's own and one inside the fuel pump.

I had not idea you have a 318, sorry. Late model 325i cars have 2.
