    How reliable are OBD codes

Looking at a car currently that is developing problems as we speak. The OBD code first read one thing and that part was replaced. Now another code and problem. Are these code readouts accurate and reliable.

Most of the fault codes on one of these cars can be taken literally. But a lambda code can be caused by a number of problems. Then there are times when the fault code(s) reported appears to be in error, in which case there's a deeper problem that has to be found and fixed.

In general, whether it is on an E30 or later car, the fault codes should be viewed as a diagnostic aid and further tests should be done to assess the accuracy of the code. If the code points to a bad sensor, test the sensor (if possible) before replacing it.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I hate to sound ignorant but what is the Lambda code.

Years ago my car would run fine, then lose power randomly. Took it to the mechanic, the code would show for the oxygen sensor, replaced that but still no change. Took it for a drive with the scanner hooked-up and the next code was for the fuel injection system. Replaced the injectors. Still experienced the same problems. Changed the fuel pump, same problem, etc. Eventually figured-out it was a bad ground. Codes are a starting point.
